What is Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR)?
After an injury or even with a short period of rest following surgery our muscles can begin to “atrophy” or waste away. Blood Flow Restriction training allows us to continue to build muscle without overloading the injured site. The technique uses a blood pressure cuff to safely limit the blood flow within your arm or leg during a therapeutic exercise or movement. By reducing blood flow, a swelling effect is created and the muscles involved will reach fatigue with less resistance required. Your body will feel like it is getting a workout and feeling a muscle “pump” without the stress and strain of heavy resistance. This has been a very popular form of training used by many professional athletes to cut down on rehab time after injury.
